What are the six physiological parameters used in the NEWS2 early warning scoring system?
The six physiological parameters in NEWS2 are respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate, and level of consciousness (LOC).
NEWS2 uses scoring based on deviation of each of these six measurements from normal ranges. An additional score is added if the person is receiving oxygen therapy, and the individual scores are aggregated into a total trigger score that guides clinical escalation.
Key points
- Respiratory rate
- Oxygen saturation
- Temperature
- Systolic blood pressure
- Pulse rate
- Level of consciousness (LOC)
