Its mucosa is thicker, its crypts are deeper, and its crypts contain tremendous numbers of goblet cells. The mucus produced by these goblet cells eases the passage of feces and protects the intestinal wall from acids and gases released by resident bacteria. Thus, the difference in structure reflects the small intestine's role in nutrient absorption versus the large intestine's role in residue storage, water absorption, and feces elimination.
