Microvilli are long, densely packed cytoplasmic extensions of the absorptive cells that produce a brush border appearance. The plasma membranes of microvilli bear brush border enzymes that complete carbohydrate and protein digestion, and the microvilli greatly increase the surface available for absorption. Thus, circular folds mainly slow and mix chyme, while villi and microvilli provide the expanded epithelial surface through which nutrients are absorbed.
